5/1/2024 0 Comments Teddy moutinho album![]() So this engineer, sounding very authoritative, says to Red one day, “By the way, Red, I think you’re a little out of tune.” Red was known to have great pitch, he was known to hit the note. Because Red Callender was very, very particular about tuning his bass. Come a time he picked the wrongest thing in the world to say to the wrongest person and boy, when he said it the studio got to where you could hear a mouse piss on cotton. ![]() There was an engineer out there, I won’t call his name somebody must have asked him what he thought once, and from then on he had to assert himself. ![]() I remember the stop-time in the bridge made me think of tap dancing. “You Send Me,” that’s a perfect example of simplicity, I can’t think of any arrangement that could have been better for that tune. His stuff wasn’t my favorite but I admired one thing, the simplicity of it. That music looked like fly shit, notes all over. When it really dawned on me that I could do this was when I had to play cartoon music, the hardest music I ever had to play. We never did another thing, but it worked once. It went to number 4-that’s pop, not no R&B chart. We put it under Ernie Fields, an old bandleader wasn’t doing nothing. You see, back in New Orleans millions of old white guys always said, “By God, do you boys know ‘In the Mood’?” If they liked it so much, why wouldn’t their kids, if we put a rock-and-roll beat to it? Rene and Plas said, “Okay, write an arrangement,” so I did. One day I said, “Let’s do a rock version of ‘In the Mood.’” Me and Rene Hall and Plas Johnson always talked about how we could make some money and not leave the studio. Got on the bus and said, “Where do you want me to sit, I’m green!” Threw him off, too. One time Mike Sherpas, a white trumpet player we called Cheese, painted himself green. “Not with niggers you can’t.” Threw him off the bus. “Can’t sit there, it’s the black section.” I saw a white guy get thrown off a city bus once for sitting in the black section. It wasn’t their fault they couldn’t take you downtown you knew they couldn’t do a damn thing about it. ![]() : White musicians who were in town at the Roosevelt came down. Earl had never gone near a bass, he just didn’t want to hire a bass player. We used to cheer every time he hit a note that was actually in the chord. We welcomed that, because Earl couldn’t play. Ellis Marsalis used to sub for Frank and sometimes for Tyler sometimes he’d even play Earl’s bass. Sam Mooney never became well known but he was a good guitar player. Three of us in that group were the best jazz players in New Orleans at the time: Edward Frank, Red, and me. He could sight-read almost anything, and also did a bit of arranging and composing. He is the drummer on hundreds of hit songs from the 1960s and 1970s, but also recorded film scores, TV jingles, etc., in almost every musical genre. He is credited with inventing the straight-eighths beat on the hi-hat or cymbal that is characteristic of rock ‘n roll, and says that he got the idea from Little Richard’s straight eighth-note pounding on the piano. Earl Palmer was a first-call session drummer in Los Angeles from the late 50s into the 80s, but got his start in New Orleans (where he began as a boy tap-dancer) making records with Fats Domino and Little Richard. Excerpts from Backbeat: Earl Palmer’s Story, by Tony Scherman-long out of print, but wonderful.

This can seem overwhelming, but in execution it’s easier to make sense of. Within each phase, there are three “waves,” which generally contain at least one new release from every major publishing category: an adult novel, a YA novel, a middle grade installment, a comic book story arc, and so on. The High Republic is broken up into three “phases ,” each about a year long. The best way to tackle them is to learn how releases are structured, and to follow what interests you. How do I dive in?Įven though the High Republic is only two years old, there’s already a staggering number of stories set within it. The Jedi’s struggle against the Nihil forms the spine of the High Republic, but as the High Republic consists of multiple novels, comics, and other media, there is much more going on. Piracy gives way to terrorism and all-out war, as the Jedi are blindsided by the Nihil’s attacks and slowly begin to unravel Marchion Ro’s true motivations. Initially a member of a gang of crafty space pirates, Marchion Ro slowly executes a plan to turn his gang, the Nihil, into something more menacing and under his absolute control. The short version is simple: If the High Republic is supposed to be an era where the Jedi were at their very best, then someone’s gotta make them prove it. (Yoda, for example, is very much around, a spry 700-something.) It’s also an era that keeps many centuries between itself and the Old Republic era, as to not infringe on another popular setting. It’s far enough in the past to feel very different from the Star Wars fans know, but close enough to have a lot of recognizable people and places. ![]() ![]() In these stories, the Jedi are ideologically aligned but also diverse - there is a code, sure, but they’re all still pretty human and dynamic characters. High Republic stories are about Jedi at their peak as a diplomatic force, making a case for the Order as a powerful ally to both community building and defense. The general idea is that these stories depict what is effectively the last golden age of the Jedi Order, before the institutional rot that made the order so stodgy and ripe for obliteration by Emperor Palpatine by the time of The Clone Wars and the prequel trilogy. Most of the action takes place about 200 years before The Phantom Menace. Soon, the High Republic will be featured on screen for the very first time in the forthcoming Disney Plus serious The Acolyte. While the High Republic is mainly overseen by a brain trust of authors writing its stories, it’s also similar to a Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting, like the Forgotten Realms or Planescape: a self-contained chunk of a very popular whole, one that’s ripe for exploration across all sorts of media. ![]() The goal is to tell a diverse set of stories all centering on a new cast of characters responding to huge, status-quo shaking events. The High Republic is primarily a sprawling publishing initiative from Lucasfilm that comprises myriad books, comics, and audio dramas all set in a previously unexplored era of Star Wars history. With this specific and fairly new era of Star Wars history about to get its TV close-up, there’s no better time to dive into this impressively huge - and still ongoing - story. Soon, the High Republic will find its way to Disney Plus with the forthcoming series The Acolyte, bringing a wave of new fans into the newest corner of Star Wars lore. It’s the High Republic, a massive multimedia project set centuries before the movies telling an ambitious, large-scale story about a different era of Jedi Knights facing a different kind of menace than fans have seen before. One of the most ambitious and large-scale Star Wars stories happening right now hasn’t been on Disney Plus or in movie theaters - at least, not yet. ![]() Advanced print lines are 1 cm wide with a dotted half line.
